University of Queensland – Presentation Panel on Cultural Diversity

Recently, Greg Bantick, Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioner and acupuncturist, has participated in a panel presentation to students of the University of Queensland who are training as educators in the field of health, regarding sensitivity and understanding to different cultures and viewpoints.

Greg gave some background on Traditional Chinese Medicine and the sorts of conditions seen in clinic daily, as well as an Asian viewpoint of well-being and the way that disease is languaged which can be quite different from the Western understanding.

Another speaker, Alison, discussed Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander approaches to health and well-being, and the treatment of disease. Further, she spoke of some ways in which we may stereotype the diverse communities under this banner, as well as how to make connections within communities and develop our capacity to help and educate.

Dylan spoke as a convert to Islam, on issues of misunderstanding towards his community and some very positive values that education within his community seek to develop. For example, education is toward being a good and healthy person, not just a good citizen or a well-trained technician.

The panel presentation was a wonderful event that helped students to learn and understand about the importance of the sensitivity to cultural diversity, especially in the health care setting.
